A century ago, the World Government sold it as "Peace on Earth." All they did was convince the citizens of the world to download their minds into the Internet, leaving their bodies floating in stasis tanks. Now Sergeant First Class (Ret.) Scott Douglas was free to read a book in peace, without having to listen to the hippies and their endless whining. His only job was to walk through the stasis tanks once a day and check for problems. Then the Internet went down. Without it regulating their brains, humanity would be dead in a matter of days. It was up to Scott to save the hippies, even if all they did was complain. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Jason Sprenger. Hippies, Indians, and the Fight for Red Power  ...

Through much of the 20th century, federal policy toward Indians sought to extinguish all remnants of native life and culture. That policy was dramatically confronted in the late 1960s when a loose coalition of hippies, civil rights advocates, Black Panthers, unions, Mexican-Americans, Quakers and other Christians, celebrities, and others joined with Red Power activists to fight for Indian rights. In Hippies, Indians and the Fight for Red Power, Sherry Smith offers the first full account of this remarkable story. Hippies were among the first non-Indians of the post-World War II generation to seek contact with Native Americans. The counterculture saw Indians as genuine holdouts against conformity, inherently spiritual, ecological, tribal, communal - the original "long hairs". Searching for authenticity while trying to achieve social and political justice for minorities, progressives of various stripes and colors were soon drawn to the Indian cause. Black Panthers took part in Pacific Northwest fish-ins. Corky Gonzales' Mexican American Crusade for Justice provided supplies and support for the Wounded Knee occupation. Actor Marlon Brando and comedian Dick Gregory spoke about the problems Native Americans faced. For their part, Indians understood they could not achieve political change without help. Non-Indians had to be educated and enlisted. Smith shows how Indians found, among this hodge-podge of dissatisfied Americans, willing recruits to their campaign for recognition of treaty rights; realization of tribal power, sovereignty, and self-determination; and protection of reservations as cultural homelands. The coalition was ephemeral but significant, leading to political reforms that strengthened Indian sovereignty. Thoroughly researched and vividly written, this book not only illuminates this transformative historical moment but contributes greatly to our understanding about social movements. 1. An activist’s murder forces Jill to infiltrate Berkeley’s psychedelic underworld A town as diverse as Berkeley, California, is never without controversy. This year the uproar is over the Rainbow Village, a hippie-occupied bayside lot that has degenerated into a drug-infested cesspool. As the city tries to eject the squatters, two Grateful Dead fans are murdered and a developer is assaulted. But for homicide detective Jill Smith, the conflict at the Village is only a nuisance until the violence gets personal. While staking out a coffee shop, Jill sees Liz Goldenstern, a handicapped activist who has long been a thorn in the side of local business. Her wheelchair has broken down, and Jill offers to push her home. The next morning, Liz is found savagely murdered at the Village. To find her killer, Jill will have to remember that sometimes hippies are far from pacifists. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Teri Linden. The 1960s were full of hippies, hitchhiking, drugs, and war. Carson Chance, a 24-year-old Vietnam War veteran, returns home to Dallas without a college degree and with an injured leg. By chance, he is offered a position at a small private investigating company. His life is interrupted when he is cruising on his motorcycle on the interstate and stops to pick up a ravishing brunette looking for a ride. Amy Warren is younger than she looks and tugs at Carson's heart when he finds she has run a-way from home. He offers her a place to sleep for the night but she is determined not to leave and becomes his roommate; Amy fuels the fire that burns within him and the sparks begin to fly. The arrangement works for a while until Carson decides to investigate her past, uncovering a mask of lies and deception. Wanted for murdering her stepfather, she is a fugitive from the law. The story takes you on an emotional roller coaster ride through several years of their traumatic relationship, where two dysfunctional people try to survive during a dysfunctional time. Do you always feel stressed? Are you always anxious about the future?Do you feel like your brain never turns off?Stop right there. Take a second and take a deep breath. We are about to embark on a life-changing journey. When it comes to relaxing and resting the body, most people do this quite well. However, when it comes to relaxing the mind, many individuals struggle and cannot seem to give the mind the relaxation it needs. Many individuals think that meditating is something only Buddhist monks do. Others see it as some artsy-fartsy marketing scam or, even worse, something reserved for hippies blown away on drugs. To meditate is to observe thoughts and feelings without judging them, says John Kabat-Zinn. Meditation could be like a gymnasium where we train to let thoughts and feelings pass without clinging to them, a bit like "opening ourselves to life" without pretending anything and also without doing or observing anything else. The moment we realize that we have become hooked on a thought and we refocus, we are meditating. In fact, the Tibetans called the place where they meditated gompa, which means nothing other than "training room".To meditate is to put your mind in the same place as your feet. If you understand that every time you bring your mind to the present, you inhabit your body, you are no longer on autopilot; you are meditating. You will see that meditating, in essence, does not take time. Meditation has become common to many people. Even people working for Google have their daily meditation space to improve creativity, humor, performance, and group connection. For someone that is new to the meditation space, desiring peace, relaxation, and clarity...listening to a guided meditation is the best thing you can do for a beginner. So, make sure you have got yourself a nice pair of headphones or earphones, tuck yourself into bed, close your eyes, and prepare for a new world of relaxation.P 1.
