Through much of the 20th century, federal policy toward Indians sought to extinguish all remnants of native life and culture. That policy was dramatically confronted in the late 1960s when a loose coalition of hippies, civil rights advocates, Black Panthers, unions, Mexican-Americans, Quakers and other Christians, celebrities, and others joined with Red Power activists to fight for Indian rights. In Hippies, Indians and the Fight for Red Power, Sherry Smith offers the first full account of this remarkable story. Hippies were among the first non-Indians of the post-World War II generation to seek contact with Native Americans. The counterculture saw Indians as genuine holdouts against conformity, inherently spiritual, ecological, tribal, communal - the original "long hairs". Searching for authenticity while trying to achieve social and political justice for minorities, progressives of various stripes and colors were soon drawn to the Indian cause. Black Panthers took part in Pacific Northwest fish-ins. Corky Gonzales' Mexican American Crusade for Justice provided supplies and support for the Wounded Knee occupation. Actor Marlon Brando and comedian Dick Gregory spoke about the problems Native Americans faced. For their part, Indians understood they could not achieve political change without help. Non-Indians had to be educated and enlisted. Smith shows how Indians found, among this hodge-podge of dissatisfied Americans, willing recruits to their campaign for recognition of treaty rights; realization of tribal power, sovereignty, and self-determination; and protection of reservations as cultural homelands. The coalition was ephemeral but significant, leading to political reforms that strengthened Indian sovereignty. Thoroughly researched and vividly written, this book not only illuminates this transformative historical moment but contributes greatly to our understanding about social movements. 1. In the mid-60s, Joe from the Bronx and Beth the orphan escape New York City for Canada, hoping to leave their past lives - and American politics - behind them. At a peace march on their way north, their fortunes intertwine with the fate of Dick, a Royal Military College Officer Cadet. Armed with naïveté, optimism, and a little weed, the three homestead on Nova Scotia's North Mountain. Unlike many of the fair-weather hippies of summer, they make it through the first winter with a little help from their hardier neighbors. Steve, a man damaged by the Vietnam War, shatters their peaceful existence in one night of rape and violence. When he disappears, the Mountain folk hope that peace will return to their little world. Birth, marriage, death, divorce, and fresh relationships complicate their lives. But even as they gradually resolve the consequences of their own pasts, they become increasingly aware that Steve may return to destroy all they have achieved. 1. Language: English. The surprising story of eccentric young scientists who stood up to convention—and changed the face of modern physics. In the 1970s, amid severe cutbacks in physics funding, a small group of underemployed physicists in Berkeley decided to throw off the constraints of academia and explore the wilder side of science. Dubbing themselves the “Fundamental Fysiks Group,” they pursued a freewheeling, speculative approach to physics. Some dabbled with LSD while conducting experiments. They studied quantum theory alongside Eastern mysticism and psychic mind reading, discussing the latest developments while lounging in hot tubs. Unlikely as it may seem, this quirky band of misfits altered the course of modern physics, forcing mainstream physicists to pay attention to the strange but exciting underpinnings of quantum theory. Their work on Bell’s theorem and quantum entanglement helped pave the way for today’s advances in quantum information science. A lively and entertaining Cinderella story, How the Hippies Saved Physics takes us to a time when only the unlikeliest heroes could break the science world out of its rut. 1. Language: English. Seven short stories are in this compilation. The lead story is: "Miss Lucy Parker" Miss Lucy Parker is a prim, proper elderly lady. When a Volkswagen Beetle - the new kind, and pink - PINK! - turns onto the winding road that leads to Lucy's farmhouse, Lucy is sure the car's occupants are lost. And that the car probably contains hippies, because hippies drive Volkswagen Beetles. Lucy plans to tell the hippies to get lost. She has no need for their odd speech, beads and marijuana aroma. Except hippies are not in the car. A woman is, a woman wearing a short, blood-red dress that hugs her body. Thus begins Lucy Parker's great adventure. "A Weird Situation" Karen does not believe her boyfriend when he tells her that he turns into a woman for seven hours every day. "The Interview" The person interviewing Debby has a giant booger. Should she tell him and risk not getting the job? "First Day at Work" A security guard's first day at a bank has repercussions for him and three workers. "Every Day" A man struggles every day to follow through on a promise to himself. "The Doctor" A doctor salivates at the prospect of delivering bad news to a twelve-year-old girl and her mother. "The Doctor" has child molestation references. "Guardian Angel" Gabriel fancies himself a guardian angel. But is he really? 1. Language: English. Narrator: Wendy Tremont King. A century ago, the World Government sold it as "Peace on Earth." All they did was convince the citizens of the world to download their minds into the Internet, leaving their bodies floating in stasis tanks. Now Sergeant First Class (Ret.) Scott Douglas was free to read a book in peace, without having to listen to the hippies and their endless whining. His only job was to walk through the stasis tanks once a day and check for problems. Then the Internet went down. Without it regulating their brains, humanity would be dead in a matter of days. It was up to Scott to save the hippies, even if all they did was complain. 1.
