American Dad - Season 4

From Mike Barker, Matt Weitzman and Seth MacFarlane (Family Guy) comes this hilarious, star-spangled salute to the American race; American Dad! Attention, terrorists, pinkos, and hippies: your days are numbered! CIA Agent Stan Smith is back, stopping at nothing to make the world safe for right-wing democracy and provide for his outrageously dysfunctional extended family. Amid botched kidnapping and beefcake body doubles, Stan hosts a torturously funny CIA telethon; his wife, Francine, is reunited with her ex-fiancé; and resident-alien Roger hosts a booze-soaked spring break that may just push favourite son Steve all the way through puberty. God bless American Dad!

Hippies, Indians, and the Fight for Red Power  ...

Through much of the 20th century, federal policy toward Indians sought to extinguish all remnants of native life and culture. That policy was dramatically confronted in the late 1960s when a loose coalition of hippies, civil rights advocates, Black Panthers, unions, Mexican-Americans, Quakers and other Christians, celebrities, and others joined with Red Power activists to fight for Indian rights. In Hippies, Indians and the Fight for Red Power, Sherry Smith offers the first full account of this remarkable story. Hippies were among the first non-Indians of the post-World War II generation to seek contact with Native Americans. The counterculture saw Indians as genuine holdouts against conformity, inherently spiritual, ecological, tribal, communal - the original "long hairs". Searching for authenticity while trying to achieve social and political justice for minorities, progressives of various stripes and colors were soon drawn to the Indian cause. Black Panthers took part in Pacific Northwest fish-ins. Corky Gonzales' Mexican American Crusade for Justice provided supplies and support for the Wounded Knee occupation. Actor Marlon Brando and comedian Dick Gregory spoke about the problems Native Americans faced. For their part, Indians understood they could not achieve political change without help. Non-Indians had to be educated and enlisted. Smith shows how Indians found, among this hodge-podge of dissatisfied Americans, willing recruits to their campaign for recognition of treaty rights; realization of tribal power, sovereignty, and self-determination; and protection of reservations as cultural homelands. The coalition was ephemeral but significant, leading to political reforms that strengthened Indian sovereignty. Thoroughly researched and vividly written, this book not only illuminates this transformative historical moment but contributes greatly to our understanding about social movements. 1. A young hippie couple reach both enlightenment and social fame via their "material pragmatism", supported by both Western and Eastern religion - and with some help from an American Indian named "Little Bird". They triumph, both materially and spiritually, after almost hitting rock bottom. This eclectic novel, described by the author as borrowing from all genres of fiction, features kidnapping, mental illness, psychedelics, folk-rock, radicals and liberals, good hippies, a hippie terrorist, amateur telescope makers, ecological power companies, gurus, and more. 1. Prem Rawat and Counterculture (eBook, ePUB)
82,95 € *

Ron Geaves demonstrates how the convergence of Prem Rawat, formerly known as Guru Maharaj Ji, and Glastonbury Fayre in 1971 was a key event in understanding the jigsaw that came to be known as 'New Age' spirituality. The book charts the discovery of Prem Rawat in India in 1969 by a small number of British and North American 'hippies', and explores how his arrival in Britain in June 1971, as well as his speech from the pyramid stage at the Fayre at just 13 years old, escalated his activities to make him one of the key influencers of 1970s counterculture spirituality. Both Glastonbury and Prem Rawat have gone on to re-emerge in significantly different identities to the ones presented in 1971. The meeting between the two demonstrates how alternative spiritualities were being formed in the 1960s and how some strands went on to develop into the 'New Age' counterculture that eventually permeated mainstream cultures in Britain and the USA.
